the mom/artist notebook, pt. I,
images and reflections of artists who are also mothers
A friend told Herlinde that to be an artist, you need time. As a young mother and photographer, time was indeed her biggest obstacle. So his statement stuck. If creation is the product of dedicated work, isn’t being a mother precisely the ultimate body of work?
She gave three of her friends, all mothers and artists, a notebook with questions and captured the familiar repetition of motherhood: feeding, playing, strolling, swimming, bathing, sleeping… These moments coincided with communal reflection.
What does it mean to be a mother and an artist?
Time no longer felt utopian, but was the key. How do you spend your time? In the every day, in the present, in the balance of caring and creating.
