Melanie and Stephanie Hausberger are Austrian identical twin artists whose photographic practice is rooted in intimacy, proximity, and shared authorship. Living and working between Austria and New York City, they developed a deeply personal visual language by photographing one another, exchanging roles seamlessly between subject and author.

Their New York photographs are quiet, diaristic, and unguarded—made in apartments, bedrooms, mirrors, streets, and fleeting moments of daily life. Rather than staging scenes, the sisters work instinctively, allowing the camera to register closeness, repetition, separation, and the subtle tension between individuality and sameness that defines twinhood.

The act of photographing each other becomes a form of conversation and self-recognition: the gaze is never external, but mutual. Authorship dissolves into a shared presence, where intimacy replaces performance and the city functions as a lived backdrop rather than a spectacle.

The book New York brings together photographs made exclusively in New York, forming a cohesive portrait of time, place, and relationship—an inner view of the city as experienced through sisterhood, cohabitation, and constant observation.

Melanie and Stephanie Hausberger are Austrian-born identical twin artists based between New York and the Tyrolean Alps. After studying Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York, they have continued to work collaboratively across painting, drawing, and photography. Working together since childhood, their practice explores identity, body image, control and chaos, and the tension between sameness and individuality. Influenced by artists including Pablo Picasso, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Egon Schiele, their figurative works combine representation with an abstract visual language.
